I see my art as a journey, one which I invite the viewer to engage in with me. I attempt to create a conceptual milieu where we meet on this introspective bridge and trudge the uncharted roadways of our imaginations and experiences towards a place where definitions are deconstructed and new possibilities emerge.

Onye William-West studied at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he completed both his B.A and M.F.A in visual communication design and photography. He was introduced to the Natural Synthesis ideology propagated by the Nsukka art school, which proposes the marriage of dominant indigenous art traditions, forms and ideas with influential Western or alien concepts. As a student there, he was inspired by the works and tutelage of his academic adviser El Anatsui alongside other veterans of the ideology such as Uche Okeke, Obiora Udechukwu, Ola Oloidi and Chike Aniakor.
William-West has also participated in art exhibitions both locally and internationally, the most recent being his inclusion in the 2014 Graphic Art Biennale held in Romania. As a visual artist, his works and concepts explore an eccentric form of hybridity that encourages and explores uncharted points of intersection between creative photography, video art, video installations, sculpture and painting.

Although I sometimes adopt conventional mediums, I am more interested in using materials the environment throws up, that possess some sort of history in the sense that they have been handled by individuals or induce empathic and sometimes nostalgic emotional responses when perceived. Relying on our basic inherent desire for beauty, poetics and seduction, I am interested in contriving hybrid arrangements that are somewhat allusive, labyrinthine and surreal, providing leads that will stir up the viewer’s impulse for adventure into newer insights or discoveries.
I enjoy hiking in my spare time and many of my pieces are directly influenced by these hikes in nature. I love recreating and conceptually referencing plants and wildlife in my works of art.
